Mark worked with founders Kim and Bryan Karrick to transform their shared passion for gin into Scratch Distillery, a tasting room, production space, and Gin Learning Center located in the heart of Edmonds, WA. The project occupies a renovated mid-century grocery building, now a hub for local food, beverage, and art.
At the center of the visitor experience is a custom horseshoe-shaped tasting and teaching bar, designed for intimate interaction between guests and the distillery team. Here, visitors can explore the art of gin-making, guided by the owners themselves. Scratch’s signature brand green — a nod to the founders’ Michigan State University roots — is used strategically throughout the space to strengthen brand recognition without overwhelming the warm, industrial palette.
Behind the tasting room, the production area houses mashing and fermentation tanks alongside a precision-engineered Kothe double column still imported from Eislingen, Germany. The design blends polished concrete floors, blackened wood millwork, and bright white quartz with playful pops of color, creating a refined yet approachable environment. The result is a space that is equal parts educational, sensory, and social — embodying the Scratch ethos of crafting gin “from scratch.” The work was completed while Mark was a founding principal at Urbanadd.
”Talking to other buildout consumers tonight and we are reminded of how thankful we are that Mark Ward provided us with an amazing space on time and at budget for Scratch Distillery.

”We toured distilleries in Washington and Oregon looking for smart layouts and hoping for inspiration. We knew after the first meeting with Mark’s team that this was a group of people that could understand what our company was about and what we hoped to convey with our architectural design - as an extension of our brand.
