Crimson Wine Group, based in Napa, California, owns and operates two Pacific Northwest wineries—Double Canyonin Horse Heaven Hills, WA and Archery Summitin the Willamette Valley, OR. The design challenge was to express through architecture the unique, agricultural characteristics of these wineries in an urban setting. Ultimately, the tasting room, set in Seattle’s Pioneer Square Historic District, had tell the story of each winery’s terroir.
The design puts large-scale, immersive photography at the center by pairing the rich texture of the building’s century-old brick with a lenticular art installation that presents images from Double Canyon when entering the space, and Archery Summit when departing. The space incorporates public and private tasting areas, retail displays, prep kitchen, and support spaces. Mark collaborated with Best Practice Architecture on the project while he was a founding principal at Urbanadd.
